His dedication to providing the most recent research-based interventions has allowed him to be a leader in the treatment of anxiety in children, adults, couples, and families in Rhode Island.

Richard uses primarily a Cognitive Behavioral Approach. His understanding of the disorder allows him to provide his patients with the appropriate psycho-education needed to first understand the illness that affects millions of Americans.  With Anxiety, many different approaches are used, but he has been successful using mindfulness techniques along with imagery. Breathing techniques, modified with EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy, allows a more complete understanding of the function of the anxiety and the role it may be playing in an individual’s life.

For those with fears and phobias, he uses exposure therapy in or out of the office. Using exposure therapy, he has also been successful at treating  OCD.

Many times children may be angry, oppositional, or defiant, and their primary emotions are fear-based. They react in order to gain control over their lives. This is especially true for those with attachment issues or an adverse childhood experience. Richard fully analyzes the function of this behavior and teaches children how to appropriately recognize the emotion behind the thoughts. This helps in learning the appropriate coping skills that can modulate emotions.

Richard also helps his clients understand irrational thoughts or thinking by using Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy, in which the thoughts are questioned and put in perspective, with the aim of attempting to create a more healthy thinking process. This approach also allows changes in cognitive restructuring.

Richard takes most insurances and sees patients in Lincoln, Cranston, East Greenwich and East Providence. To schedule an appointment please call 475-9979 or click here to send an email.
