Here I Stand: Poem written by 14 year-old with Depression

May 26, 2011   //   by Richard Figueira   //   Blog, Mental Health  //  No Comments

Here I stand, surrounded by darkness

Lost in the maze that is my mind

I see a faint light, which guides me further into the unknown

I do not look at the dark, for it would only blind me

And cause me to give in to myself

Rather, I focus on the dim light, and nothing else

The light is like a voice, calling to me

As I walk towards it, it seems to run away from me

But I know it will always be with me

The light is an angel, sent to protect me

From the demons that I created

The light guides me through the dark

And puts my mind at ease

I may sleep now, free of doubt

Psychological Testing: What is it?

May 25, 2011   //   by Richard Figueira   //   Uncategorized  //  No Comments

At Anchor Counseling we provide counseling and therapy, but we also provide psychological testing.  Psychological testing can mean many different things depending on what you are looking to answer.  Although it is an “assessment,” the validity of the outcome depends mostly on the accuracy of the people reporting the answers to the questions presented by the assessor.

There is no “fix all” with the test or assessment.  We often use these batteries of tests or assessments to help or assist in treating or educating the individuals.  Along with helping with a treatment plan, a 504, or even an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) some of these answers can also help prescribers with their assessment of the person.

There are a few different types of psychological testing.  There are achievement testing, IQ testing, Cognitive (Neuropsychological), Personality, and a host of other sub-categories that would be specific to the person being tested and what information is being saught.

We tend to ask for testing when there are questions in a clinical interview that is making an appropriate diagnostic profile difficult to understand.  We are usually looking for additional information that will help the person, family, and treaters come up with a comprehensive plan that will assist all involved.

It is much more difficult for a person to lie on a test as many of the tests are set up with questions that would “alarm” someone testing.  Also, the assessments are scientifically based.  The important thing to note is that sometimes the test does depend on the interpretation of the person given the assessment.

Psychological tests can often be of great assistance.  The fact that you are looking for a test means you are also looking to better understand a situation.  We are more than willing and available to assist in any which way we can.  A team approach always better than a one person answer to a very complex issue.

Livestrong: Team M-Power! Pete Mandeville

May 12, 2011   //   by Richard Figueira   //   Uncategorized  //  No Comments

As if you had any doubt . . . M-Power will go on. I’m reminded of the end of Braveheart, one of me and Marc’s favorite movies, where the Scotts are facing down Longshanks Army and Robert the Bruce says, “You have bled with Wallace. Now bleed with me.”

This is going to be a very difficult year and I don’t mean from a fundraising standpoint. Marc’s absence is an undeniable void that we’ll be reminded every step of the way. We have chosen to pick up the M-Power reins because we know this is an important mission. We do it for Marc, to carry on his vision. We do it for our other friends and family that we have lost. We do it for those that are still fighting. We do it for those that can’t. We do it because we can.

If you would like to donate to this wonderful cause and help with Marc’s vision all you needs to do is click on “I want to help.”

Thank you for your support!

2nd Annual Big Backyard Barbecue: TEAM M-Power

“…LIVESTRONG is about access and advocacy…” ~ Marc Mandeville

The following is an excerpt taken from Marc’s CaringBridge webpage…
On January 14, 2008, I had a colonoscopy after noticing some significant changes in my daily routine. The procedure revealed a mass in my lower colon. CT scans that followed revealed that the cancer had already spread to my liver (most likely some time ago) and that we were already at Stage IV.
For the last three weeks I have been preparing myself for the fight of a lifetime, and I have a team of doctors, caregivers, family, colleagues and friends ready to stand by my side in battle. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy will begin Wednesday, FEB 13th in an effort to fight back and shrink the cancer in my liver and at my primary tumor site. I’m currently soliciting the opinions of numerous Doctors in an effort to determine the most aggressive, curative approaches available to me in an order that we stem the tide of this disease and get me back on my feet as soon as possible.
Things that I’ve learned over the past month or so:

NEVER LOOK AT THE INTERNET. While the web is nice for looking up the newest research and innovations along with phone numbers of experts in the field, it is NOT the place to go looking for particularly accurate statistics. Many studies done on colorectal cancer and the percentages that come from them are compiled from “all comers”, meaning that the study groups include the young, the old, people who got treated and those who chose not to. I believe that since cancer decided to grow inside of me that my youth and health makes me a better candidate for successful treatment than, say, a 78 year old person who may or may not choose the most aggressive methods of treatment. The only percentages you need to know are your personal ones. Treatment is successful or it isn’t….surgery is complete or not. It doesn’t matter if 3 people you know didn’t succeed….you can if you have the will. That’s my attitude.
YOUR SUPPORTERS WILL BE YOUR STRENGTH. In addition to my family, who have always been behind me no matter what, I have received HUNDREDS of calls, emails, meal offers, and cards from my friends, current and former students, their parents, my poker group and my FABULOUS colleagues at work. I am convinced that no one knows how to rally better than a school community, and The Episcopal Academy does this IN SPADES! Thank you to all of you!!!!
YOU HAVE TO LAUGH A LOT. Kacey, One of my dearest friends, told me that it is a must for your health to laugh at least one, full-out, full-volume belly laugh every day. Whether it’s my friend Scott calling my chemo port my “blowhole” or someone else with a well-timed joke, you have to hand it to friends and family…..they bring this out easily.
WHEN YOU NEED A BRIGHT SIDE….LOOK TO KIDS. It doesn’t matter when you’re down, if you find a kid to watch…even for a second…you find something to make you happy again, believe again, or forget troubles again. Often it’s my children (Christian, 4; or Lia and Olivia, 1); but it’s even my students or my 32-year old brother :) . Seeing people really happy, laughing and content really puts me at peace. My daughter Olivia has this habit of snoring as she falls asleep…I think I could listen to it for hours. My son’s excitement when he succeeds at something, the girls laughing hysterically, and the many other “childish” moments that reveal themselves in life can make you forget the rough stuff, which even for a moment is great.

Thanks for all of your continuing love and support. There will need to be another lifetime for me to properly thank everyone who already has given so much. I am one lucky (and grateful) guy. ~ Marc
Taken from Team M-Power’s page:
Our Manifesto

We are saying “NO” to cancer. We strive to be part of something bigger than ourselves. We will, within the best of our abilities, continue our founder’s fight. We will support the livestrong Foundation to help ensure that anyone, and everyone has the knowledge, support, resources and ability to live life on their own terms and to be able to say “NO” to cancer.

We welcome all who have lost someone to cancer, who know someone with cancer, who love someone with cancer, who care for someone with cancer and those who have not experienced cancer. We strive to do all we can, BECAUSE WE CAN, to see the day that cancer is a disease of history. We are human and survival is our most basic instinct. We will overcome through faith, attitude, family, courage and strength.

After riding 20 miles in the Livestrong event in PA, Marc left us almost 1 month later. He fought a courageous fight til the very end.

This year, Team M-Power will be holding the now Annual Big Backyard Barbecue. This event is scheduled for June 18th here in RI. Tickets for this event are being sold all over the country and will hopefully sell out as it did last year. Only 500 tickets will be sold!!!!!

Does your Teen need counseling?

May 10, 2011   //   by Richard Figueira   //   Blog, East Providence, Lincoln, Rhode Island, Mental Health, cranston  //  No Comments

At Anchor Counseling we provide therapy to Adolescents to help them and their families get back on track.  These maybe the most difficult years for these young people.  They deal with many psychosocial stressors including individual, family, and peer pressure.

Some may have Anxiety, Depression, a history of abuse (Trauma), Behavioral issues, Anger, an Easting Disorder.  Whatever the issues, we can help.

We will provide your son or daughter with the most professional, reliable and consistent emotional support to them and the entire family while we help assist and identify the issues at hand.  This phase of their lives can be very challenging for the entire family.  Getting them to understand themselves and give them coping skills to assist in modulating emotions is a step in the right direction no matter what the issue is.

If you know someone that could benefit from therapy please contact us.

Poem by Julia Melidossian: OCD

by Quotes to Remember: Anchor Counseling Center on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at 10:35pm

Many people have heard of OCD,

But few of them know how debilitating it can be.

It could start with hand washing cycles of four,

But after awhile, you have to wash eight times more.

Or eating your food in a particular way,

Just to be sure no one dies that day.

Completing everything in multiples of two,

Is certainly a time consuming thing to do.

The brain is telling you these rituals make sense,

But continuing to do them just makes you tense.

But you may be very surprised to know,

There is a way to let these compulsions go.

Resisting the ritual is the hardest thing to do,

And you may think its something you’ll never get through.

But believe me, friend, if you work super hard,

The compulsions will ease, and you’ll let down your guard.

Trust me, I’ve been there and I can totally relate,

But soon OCD will subside, and you will feel great.
