Setbacks! Keep moving forward! Every step is meaningful.
Everyone deals with change, setbacks, disappointments, and at times feel like we are stuck in mud or just spinning our wheels. Although at times, this could be the perception the truth is that no matter what is happening every step along the journey should be meaningful.
The Weekly Compass wrote an article on January 8, 2008. In the article titled Every Step is forward: No going back they did a great job at pointing out exactly what it means to take a positive spin no matter what curve ball life may have thrown at you.
“There are times when we feel that we are spinning our wheels in the mud in terms of our spiritual progress. This can be especially true following a period of major growth in which we feel as if we’ve gained a lot of ground. In fact, this is the way growth goes.” It is important to note hear that despite making progress in certain areas, there will always be more issues that arise and we should continue to move forward and not consider this a set back. “The hard work we have done cannot be undone.”
“Every step is meaningful and even one that seems to take us backward is a forward step in the sense that it is what we must do to move to the next level.” We are constantly working at life. It doesn’t stop because we have been able to conquer one obstacle. Life is just that! We keep living. Dealing and coping with what the day brings.
“Once the sun rises, it doesn’t go backward but instead follows its path in one direction. It may appear to stand still for a moment in time, or to move more slowly at some point or another, but really it is steadily moving forward in it’s path.” Just like the sun is our life. At times, we wish things we move a little faster but as long as we remain mindful, the journey to our daily goals will continue. Sometimes slower than others but nevertheless always moving forward.
We can treat ourselves better by making healthier decisions. Eating healthier, getting more rest or sleep, and exercising. No matter what old issue may come back and requires revisiting, remember this is a step-forward. Progress is being made.
Be mindful of what you have accomplished and continue to see life as a journey. Follow your path (goals) and you will never feel as if you have not accomplished anything.

How do you know if you need Anger Management?
How do you know if you need anger management? You either find yourself unable to control your aggression or someone, maybe even the legal system, has asked or ordered you to attend Anger Management Classes.
There is no cure for anger but instead learn to decrease the act of allowing certain emotions to take over a situation or getting educated about the triggers that lead to how you may act out.
We tell anyone that if you can manage anger you can manage happiness too. The person does not change, unless you choose to change.
Psycho-education play a huge part in learning to control your outbursts. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) can also help with restructuring thoughts that lead to your emotions and eventually the way we all behave.
Perception or irrational thoughts maybe a leading cause. At times, what you have experienced in the past may lead to preconceived notions and anger maybe a learned behavior.
Lastly, anger for many people is much easier to deal with than to talk about what is truly the issue at hand. Someone maybe sad, depressed, anxious, fearful or many other things. Learning to cope with life is and understanding yourself will in the end help you manage you; that would be the goal. Change can only be brought by education and understanding while appropriate communicating the primary issue or emotion.

e-therapy! New treatment choice for many!
E-Therapy
e-Therapy is considered a new type of psychotherapy. It’s unique and could provide even more help to those that would not traditionally seek assistance or therapy in their lives.
With e-Therapy confidentiality and privacy is even more secure than face-to face counseling. In 1999 U.S. Surgeon General’s report stated that most people with a history of mental health issues do not seek help. With this unique approach to therapy, one may feel more comfortable talking or reaching out in their own comfort zone.
Here your home is provides you with the safety net you may need in order to feel comfortable. The relationship between you and the therapist remains the most important piece of change. With language this goal can still be obtained. Communication still happens just via today’s growing world of technology.
It is not illegal. e-therapy is considered a legitimate form of professional help. There is no research results stating that online therapy does not help. It helps as many would not get any help if not for today’s ability to communicate and build relationships via programs such as skype for instance.
This may not be the answer for you, but for those that would not traditionally leave their home due to not feeling comfortable or have limited access to get to an office this could be the answer your looking for.
I have included an article that was just recently written. Please click here to read it.
At Anchor Counseling Center, we are offering e-therapy through skype. Our skype number is anchor.counseling. Please call the office at 475-9979 to schedule a e-therapy appointment. At this point, the professional help is cash only.

Do you think you need therapy?
For many of us, it is the first big step we take into getting help for everyday issues. We often think we can handle things ourselves.
My thought is that we could all benefit from talking to someone at sometime or another. Some life coaching, someone to actively listen, someone to help us in times of unknowns. Change is difficult and we sometimes just want to share the thought. The change may lead to overall greater functioning in our everyday life.
Here is a test you can take! This test has been borrowed from psychology today. Feel free to use it and please let us know if we can help.
Click here for the test. The test has 16 questions and will take you 10 minutes.
Anxiety Disorder: Anchor Counseling can help!
Richard Figueira is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) who completed his Master of Social Work at Boston College. In addition to his work in private practice, Richard is also an Assistant Director of Special Education for a local town in Massachusetts. He is known for creating Emotional and Behavioral Programs that allow children and families to access public education despite having mental health issues.
Richard has dedicated over ten years of clinical work with children and adults having serious emotional, social, or behavioral issues in residential placements, homes, and school settings. Richard has been responsible for the direct supervision of staff including clinicians and teachers.
He has experience working with adults, families, and couples. Specializing in Mood, Thought, and Anxiety Disorders. He uses an eclectic approach depending on the client’s needs. Through the use of therapeutic interventions he has been able to help provide his clients with the psycho-education, positive and healthy coping skills, and an environment where they feel comfortable discussing everyday issues. As always, the goal is to improve the clients overall functioning in their daily lives.
Although, Richard treats many individuals with an array of issues, he specializes in the treatment of Anxiety Disorders. This includes OCD, PTSD, Panic Disorder with or without Agoraphobia, or Generalized Disorder. His dedication to providing the most recent research based interventions have allowed him to be a leader in the treatment of anxiety with children, adults, couples, and families in the state of Rhode Island.
Richard uses primarily a Cognitive Behavioral Approach. His understanding of the disorder allows him to provide his patients with the appropriate psycho-education needed to first understand the illness that affects millions of Americans. With Anxiety, many different approaches are used, but he has been successful using mindfulness techniques along with imagery. Breathing techniques modified with a EMDR, allows to completely understand the function of the anxiety and the role it maybe playing in an individuals life.
For those with fears/phobias he uses exposure therapy in or out of the office. With exposure therapy, he has also been successful at treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or better known as OCD.
Many times children maybe angry, oppositional or defiant and the primary emotion is fear based. They react in order to gain control over their lives. This is especially true for those with attachment or an adverse childhood experience. He completes and fully analyzes the function of this behavior and teaches how to appropriate recognize the emotion behind the thoughts. This will allow to teach appropriate coping skills to modulate emotions.
He will also help his clients understand irrational thoughts or thinking by using Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy. The thoughts are questioned and put in perspective when attempting to create a more healthy thinking process. This also allows for a change in cognitive restructuring.
Richard takes most insurances and sees patients in Lincoln, Cranston, and East Providence.
